She began her acting career in the late 1970s, appearing in several television movies and miniseries. In 1985, she starred in the Canadian comedy series Head Office.

Dunn's breakthrough role came in 1989, when she was cast as Sylvie Gerard in Tropical Heat. The series, which was also known as Sweating Bullets in the United States, ran for four seasons and made Dunn a household name in Canada.
